  1. First member of Feral out, can't wait for the rest! 4 Star Review

Posted by on Oct 9th 2013

Bovis is a very good value-for-money collectible. At a fraction of some of the other third party offerings, this guy comes at a very generous voyager class size that does not look at odds in scale with the Generations line.

There is a nice solid tactile feel to the make of this transforming figure and the range of arm and leg articulation is extremely impressive. I've often been put off by some of the modern day transformers offerings which come with bewildering transformation engineering that made me lose quite a few fingernails and interest in playing with the toy. Bovis however encourages me to transform it to and fro its 3 different modes, highlighting its ease of use and positive playability.

If i were to nitpick, there are minor little issues such as the horns getting in the way of the arms in some of the robot mode poses and the back heaviness of the figure once you hook the backpack on. Overall not a major concern and quickly overshadowed by its other glowing attributes.

MMC has built on some momentum with its reformatted line starting with Hexatron and this is another very encouraging step towards the final formation of Feral Rex, a personal favourite character of mine.

  4. Feral Rex blasts out of the starting gate with the debut of its first member, Bovis. 5 Star Review

Posted by on Sep 26th 2013

Bovis is quite simply the most solid combiner member, heck, maybe even the most solid transforming figure in recent years. The care put into the smaller details, such as the ruggedness of the all the numerous locking mechanisms keeping everything in its place, to the balance of complexity/ease of the transformation, to even the lovely production values of the box and its assorted goodies shows that MMC was determined that there would be little, if anything in overall package that would be overlooked. I should note that's coming from someone who has owned and had their grievances with MMC's previous Knight Morpher works for various reasons.

Rest assured, Bovis looks and feels like one stonking bot. He's massive for the price point and the accessory/plastic count compared to many other third party works. Thus he stands a hair taller than some of the biggest voyager sized transformers. As an articulation nut, Bovis has all the bases covered. Everything one would expect from a premium collectable is there, plus more! The plastic quality is fantastic and can be felt given Bovis's notable heft. He's clearly meant to have lots of play value via the durability of the materials and design work leaving no problem areas or weak spots that can easily be discerned. Unlike some other companies' products, there is nothing in the way of tolerance issues either by design or execution that gets in the way of transforming or picking up and fiddling with the figure. Everything feels refreshingly sensible, as if someone had deliberately made a it a priority to eliminate any potential issues that could arise.

The combiner bits don't feel like afterthoughts slapped on to when its time to make a giant robot. The Feral Rex fist is securely hidden in the foot piece, which doubles as a backpack motor to be placed on or wielded by Bovis in both robot and animal modes. Both sets of weapon accessories look great and can all be attached in a myriad of ways in every mode, with even some unintentional ways to store the pistols. The sculpt is finely detailed in MMC's trademark flair, with many bits of the chunky body picked out in paint. There is an expressive demeanor that radiates out of the snarl of the robot's face, which when coupled with the above average range of motion, the figure gives off quite an attitude.

If I had to mention any outstanding negative, I couldn't really find one to give. I could nitpick aspects of the design where I would have done differently, but the base design is executed with very little in the way of objective flaws. The only thing relatively close to an oversight is the way the knife handles fit into the hands pieces. They don't slide into the bottom of the robot hands as one would expect. Instead you have to twist them into place until they secure themselves at a bit of an angle. A minor nuisance, especially when they can also peg on the arms.

To sum it up, Bovis is one heck of a complete package and was well worth the expense. If the rest of the set can measure up to this first release, Feral Rex will be easily be the most competent combiner project out there. Even if he wasn't a part of a set that combined, Bovis is such a solid standalone that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him as a one off piece. This how you approach a combiner. Two thumbs way up.
